Bali: Babi Guling Candra

“The mixed pork rice set represents the true flavour of Balinese cuisine; rich in seasonings, and packing a flavour that is savoury and spicy.”

Pork-meat lovers are very fond of Bali for one thing: Babi Guling. In fact, the island is teeming with eateries that serve this speciality dish. In Denpasar, Babi Guling Candra heads the list of must-visit Babi Guling places. Founded by the restaurant’s namesake Bapak Candra, it has been providing the crowd-favourite staple for more than 40 years now, and is open daily from 10am-5pm, with its peak time being around lunchtime.

THE ATMOSPHERE

Featuring a spacious dining area that can accommodate up to 70 people, Babi Guling Candra is not equipped with an air conditioner. Thankfully, the high ceiling provides an airy environment complete with natural light. Its local patrons prefer to have their meal to go, causing long queues at the terrace area. This is good news for dine-in guests who will find it easy to get a table.

THE FOOD

As the name implies, the eatery takes pride in its Babi Guling (roast suckling pig). A serving of mixed pork rice includes sweet pork satay, blood sausage, and a bowl of pork ribs soup. The tender meat and crispy skin that makes it so special are the result of the Babi Guling being grilled for around three to four hours. The mixed pork rice set represents the true flavour of Balinese cuisine; rich in seasonings, and packing a flavour that is savoury and spicy. Besides Babi Guling, Ayam Betutu (Balinese steamed chicken) – another signature Balinese dish – is also served here. Prepared via a meticulous process that involves boiling and steaming, the Ayam Betutu is characterised by its spicy tang, topped off with hints of ginger and candlenut. Spicy food aficionados would be in for a treat with this one.

THE VERDICT

Babi Guling Candra is the perfect place to drop by if you’re keen on trying out the island’s multitude of authentic food, especially because they have two of the best around. The spacious dining area makes the restaurant an ideal choice if you’re planning to bring along a big party.
