Batam: RM Mie Tarempa

A small regency on the Anambas Islands – a mini archipelago in the Riau Islands province – Tarempa is surrounded by sea, slightly isolated from the world, and generally unheard of. Despite its unheralded reputation, Tarempa is home to two fish-based delicacies that are getting their just attention from those in neighbouring Batam.

RM Mie Tarempa is located on Jalan Laksamana Bintan and has become the go-to place for authentic local dishes. Having only opened five years ago, the joint tends to be crowded on a daily basis. This has led to the owners opening a branch in Batam Centre. For my maiden visit to the eatery, I had a go at its signature dishes: Mie Tarempa Lembab (stir-fried noodles in gravy) and Luti Gedang (fried bread filled with fish floss).

At first glance, the red-coloured noodles of the Mie Tarempa Lembab reminded me of Mie Aceh. Yet the flat noodles and fish topping lent the dish a totally different taste. Its noodles were thick and chewy in texture, blending beautifully with the peppery gravy. Mixed with fried onion, the fresh fish topping added a delicate touch to the dish.

The Luti Gedang also featured a similar spicy-and-savoury flavour, with the fish floss and the fried bread combining well. It was so delicious to the extent that I went and got myself a takeaway box filled with the treat.
