And then I proceeded to tuck into the Sate Lilit, which had me literally shaking with joy. The first bite was so luscious, and by the end I felt like I was on cloud nine.

If you ever have a trip to Lombok planned in the near future, I’d advise you to spend some time exploring Mataram before you head off to Gili Trawangan. What awaits you in this small city is a smorgasbord of tasty delicacies that will give your taste buds a treat so good that if they could talk, they’d be thanking you 24/7 non-stop.

One of those dishes that I’d like to focus on this time around is Warung Murah’s Nasi Campur Sukaraja – Lombok’s very own mixed rice. Having been in business since the 1970s, Warung Murah is seen by many locals as the best mixed rice purveyor in town. Of course, as a proper foodie – eating is a passion of mine – I just had to make time to pay a visit to its flagship shop on Jalan Yos Sudarso.

Strangely enough, one of its several branches is located nearby just by the roadside of that particular street, while its principal outlet can be found further down the road in an alleyway. A peculiar business decision indeed. Out of the two, however, I would suggest you make your way to its flagship joint for a more spacious dining area. It’s always difficult to decide which dishes to opt for when it comes to mixed rice. Everything looked so tempting. The thought of trying each and every one of them crossed my mind for a fleeting moment, before I remembered my exact weight the last time I stepped on a scale. After going through the options a couple of times, I finally made up my mind and went for fried chicken, a couple of Sate Lilit (minced chicken satay with grated coconut, and some Beberok (spicy vegetable salad).

Once I got my meal ready, I sat at one corner of the shop and dug in. The fried chicken was a tad on the sweet side and rich in flavour. My assumption is that they boiled the chicken together with the spices before deep-frying it. And then I proceeded to tuck into the Sate Lilit, which had me literally shaking with joy. The first bite was so luscious, and by the end I felt like I was on cloud nine. At first glance, it appeared that the Beberok was of the same ilk as Karedok (Sundanese vegetable salad). It comprises terung gelatik (wild eggplant), long beans, and shallot slices. However, unlike Karedok, the Beberok comes without peanut sauce dressing. It was outrageously spicy, yet in a good way, so if you’re not a fan of spicy food, then it’d be best to stay away.
