Palembang: Mie Terang Bulan

The key to enjoying a meal at Mie Terang Bulan is patience. That was exactly what my friend instructed me prior to my departure to Palembang. It gets overcrowded here, hence the lengthy service time. Further information revealed that it is advisable to tuck in to some light bites before heading to the shop, which I did.

Mie Terang Bulan only starts opening for business at 5pm every day, and it was already packed to brim when I got there. Four people were standing outside as they queued for a table. As a first-timer, I went up to the counter and asked the staff member there regarding the waiting procedure. He told me to wait in line until a vacant spot opens up. I had to endure a 30-minute period of waiting.

Although unfortunate, it’s understandable seeing the small place and its limited capacity. I ended up sharing a table with a few strangers, and my experience was delayed further as it took about 20 minutes for my food to arrive.

I ordered its much-loved dry noodles with wonton soup, and at first glance, it looked like an ordinary dry noodle dish. Topped with a few pork slices, the wonton soup was served in a separate bowl. Despite amounting to only a handful, the tender pork slices were seasoned to perfection and flavourful. The delicate minced pork filling of the wonton also won my heart and tummy as well.

Its no-frills noodles proved to be the icing on the cake. In fact, I’ll go on record to say that they’re the best I’ve ever sampled in my entire life. Savoury and chewy, they possess a slightly salty aftertaste that pampered my taste buds. Patience truly pays, and on this occasion, it rewards you with a bowl of noodles that will change your life forever.
