I have never tasted Nasi Minyak (savoury ghee rice) in my entire life prior to my departure to Palembang, so to be presented with an opportunity to sample the city’s revered delicacy got me all geed up. After going through a number of eateries, Rumah Makan Nasi Minyak H. Abuk was next on my agenda–a place renowned for serving the best Nasi Minyak in town for the last 35 years.
Since I was clueless when it came to ordering at such a joint, I sauntered over to the counter. “Just go and sit down, and we’ll send your food over,” says the middle-aged man who stood there. In less than five minutes, selections of dishes arrived and were stacked in the style of a Padang restaurant. When asked whether to go for Nasi Minyak or steamed rice, I made the obvious choice and went for the former.
I placed a piece of fried chicken and a Pentol (a minced beef-and-cabbage satay) on to my plate of Nasi Minyak. The chicken was cooked nicely and had a slightly sweet aftertaste, while the Pentol was savoury and tender with a slightly crunchy texture courtesy of the cabbage. The Nasi Minyak wasn’t as oily as I expected; it was moderately seasoned, and featured a fresh fragrance from the cardamom.
