Bali: Warung Sate Kakul

Sate Kakul (Balinese freshwater snail satay) is a rarity nowadays. During my first trip to Bali, I had to return with an empty hand, as the only seller in Denpasar has permanently closed its shop. Fortunately, while planning my second visit to the Island of Gods, I was given the book “100 Mak Nyus Bali” by Bondan Winarno, Lidia Tanod and Harry Nazarudin, which led me to go to Warung Sate Kakul in Ubud.
Upon reading the brief description, I expected Warung Sate Kakul would be an old smoke-filled eatery with uncomfortable seating arrangement. However, when I stepped inside, I saw exactly the opposite. Established in 2007, Warung Sate Kakul happens to be an eatery-cum-modern coffee shop. The interior design features wooden furniture andsaung (Indonesian gazebo), which brings out a homely ambience.
Without hesitation, I requested a set meal consisting Sate Kakul, plain rice, and Ares(banana shoots soup). Priced at Rp.25,000, the hearty meal wasn’t disappointing at all. The Sate Kakul was well marinated in Balinese spices. The chewy snails were elevated with rich sweet and spicy flavours. Ares, on the side, complimented the meal with its signature spicy flavour. To end my meal, I ordered a cup of latte. A breezy Ubud weather, a spicySate Kakul and hot coffee make this place worth to be visited while you are planning to go to Ubud.
