Bali: Pie Susu Asli Enaaak

“The crust was crunchy and buttery – where its sweet and thick filling was soft and delectably creamy.

Travelling has become a yearly, or even monthly, agenda of many – especially those middle-to-upper class Indonesians. And buying souvenirs as a remembrance or local foods to be shared with friends and relatives usually comes along in one package with the trip. Such a fact has led a number of provinces in this country to set forth a variety of unique authentic snacks for day trippers to bag home. As for Bali, one of its most favourite to-go staples is Pie Susu (milk pie).

There’s one renowned shop in Bali that has been peddling this luscious treat since 1989, which is Pie Susu Asli Enaaak. I did witness myself how crowded the shop was when I made a visit to this establishment recently. I had to queue in a relatively long line at the counter – where most of the people in front of me were seen grabbing at least three big boxes of this delight. This shop – which happened to be its flagship shop – is located on Jalan Nangka Selatan over at Denpasar area. There’s actually another outlet in Kuta, but it seemed that the customers preferred to have their freshly-baked Pie Susu from this very place.

After a 10-minute wait, it was finally my turn to place an order. There’s a selection of flavours to be chosen from, which are original, chocolate and cheese. The latter two variants, which I had been aiming from the second I arrived there, had to be pre-ordered one day before. It wasn’t my lucky day I guess. I then simply went for a small pack of the original one – since it was only for the sake of tasting it out. There are 10 pieces of Pie Susu in its small box where the bigger one contains double the amount. I didn’t want to take too long to try this famous snack, I rushed towards an empty bench in front of the shop as soon as I spotted it on my way out.

The crust was crunchy and buttery – where its sweet and thick filling was soft and delectably creamy. While munching down this sugary delight, I suddenly remembered that I needed to get something for my colleagues before my morning flight on the next day. Thus, with my mouth full of Pie Susu, I quickly ran back inside and stuck myself behind the line for another box.

A die-hard fan of authentic Indonesian delights who loves the idea of travelling to the cradle of those enticing local treats. Yet, you might often find this young lad busy with his guitar – be it alone in his room or, sometimes, on stage.
