When it comes to a wide range of mouth-watering local dishes, Bandung has them in spades. During a trip to the city, the first eatery that I popped into was Kupat Tahu Gempol – purely because it is located nearby the hotel where I was staying.
Positioned right at the front end of Pasar Gempol, this warung only operates from 6am-12pm. The moment I stepped foot at the place, I immediately went to the counter to place my order from the old lady who stood there. She alerted me that they have both Kupat Tahu (rice cake and tofu in soy sauce) and Lontong Kari (curry rice cake) on the menu. Since I have never had Lontong Kari before, I went for both.
My first experience with Kupat Tahu was a few months back when I was in Magelang, and that particular episode has set the bar quite high when it comes to this tofu-based fare for me. I considerably expected at least the same level of quality from a renowned joint that has been in the business for about 51 years such as Kupat Tahu Gempol.
Much to my surprise, the Kupat Tahu here uses peanut sauce for its dressing instead of soy sauce like in Magelang. It lends a rich and creamy texture to the proceedings, and also provides a perfect mix of sweet and savoury flavours – a combination that was also delivered by the curry rice cake, which comprises rice cakes, beef chunks, soybeans, boiled egg, and curry gravy. The latter was cooked to such an extent that its density was delicate enough and seasoned to perfection.
