Even an idiot would know that only in Bandung will you be able to sample the most authentic of Sundanese delicacies around. However, a problem arises once you reach there: so many options, so little time. Well, to make your life easier, I’ve got three words for you: Rumah Makan Laksana.
Situated on Jalan Soekarno-Hatta, Rumah Makan Laksana offers the finest Sundanese mixed rice that I’ve ever come across in the capital city of West Java. Its small-ish exterior and homely ambience belie its capacious interior, which could fit up to 150 people. Since its inception back in the 1980s, the eatery has extended its operations by opening up a number of outlets in Bandung and a couple out in Jakarta as well.
During my recent visit, I had to wait for a few minutes before I managed to secure a table as it was jam-packed at lunchtime. With a self-service system in place, I sauntered over to the counter to choose from the vast selection of dishes on display. I went for a combination of Pepes Teri (steamed anchovy fishcake), Empal (seasoned fried beef), and fried tempeh to accompany a plate of steamed white rice.
Mixed with grated coconut, the Pepes Teri had a fragile texture and was all over the place. But its taste, though, was just delish – a sensational mix of savoury and peppery. The Empal was well seasoned and had quite a delicate feel to it, making it pleasant to chew.
While you’re here, make sure to have a go at its Nasi Bakar (grilled rice wrapped in banana leaf) and fried chicken while you’re at it.
