Bandung: Tahu Yun-Yi

With many tofu purveyors out there in the market, it takes something special for one to stand out and earn a special place in the hearts and tummies of the general public. Tahu Yun-Yi has managed to do so with aplomb and has been a favourite of Bandung’s citizens for decades.

Established in 1940, Tahu Yun-Yi’s success has seen it spread its wings by opening outlets and factories in Bogor, Bekasi, Jakarta, and Semarang. My first encounter with the tofu masters took place recently during a short trip to Bandung at its shop on Jalan Laswi.

There is a selection of tofu on offer here, ranging from Tahu Prima, Tahu Han’s, Tahu Sutra and Tahu Tipis to Tahu Air and Tahu Tawar. I tried the Tahu Oke, and I asked the staff to fry them up so that I could snack on them as I tour the city. You could also have it raw if you want.

The Tahu Oke was packed in a plastic wrapper, in which contains several small square-shaped yellow and white tofu. I was informed that both colours have similar taste and texture. Of the latter, I found it to be a rich and creamy affair that got me hooked to instantly. If you plan on having one while in the City of Flowers, try and dip your tofu into a mixture of chilli and soy sauce to take your Tahu Yun-Yi experience up a notch.
