Bangka: Martabak Acau 89

Bangka: Martabak Acau 89

For those not in the know, Martabak Manis (sweet stuffed pancake) actually originated from the island of Bangka. Hence it would be a crime if one were to not enjoy it while on a visit to its place of origin. Most popular of all Martabak sellers in Pangkal Pinang is Martabak Acau 89, which I would recommend everyone to give it a go.

It first started operating in 1989 – the number 89 from its moniker is derived from its year of inauguration – and the word on the street is that its owner is related by blood to the founder of Jakarta’s very own Martabak Pecenongan 65A. Located on Jalan Soekarno Hatta, the shop offers a wide range of Martabak Manis and Martabak Telor (stuffed savoury pancake) choices. One of the staff member explained that its most sought-after variety is its chocolate-and-cheese Martabak Manis. I went along with her suggestion to see what all the fuss is about.

After a ten-minute wait, my name was bellowed out and I quickly shuffled over to the counter to collect my order. I immediately sat down and unboxed it; revealing a glowing Martabak with a delightful aroma that stirred my appetite. The melted chocolate filling looked irresistible, to the point where I just wanted to wolf it down right away regardless of it still being quite hot. The thick dough was moist and delicate, and a buttery and creamy sweet-and-savoury sensation accompanied my every bite. Only in Bangka will you be able to take pleasure in a Martabak as heavenly as this.
