Batam: Morning Bakery


With a few branches dotted around the island, Morning Bakery is one of the longest serving and most popular bakeries in Batam. First established 20 years ago, the shop doesn’t only deal with selling bread and pastries though; its menu also include a wide array of savoury dishes such as Ayam Goreng (fried chicken), Nasi Lemak (rice cooked in coconut milk), and Mie Lendir (viscous yellow noodles in peanut sauce).

Due to its early opening time, Morning Bakery tends to be packed during breakfast. I arrived at 9am and had to endure a five-minute wait before acquiring a table. Once I sat down, I ordered all the dishes that I mentioned beforehand.

The Nasi Lemak came around first. Served on a banana leaf, the fragrant rice came with a hard-boiled egg, fried anchovies, and a dollop of sambal. Its small portion makes it the perfect dish for breakfast.

While I gobbled down on my Nasi Lemak, the Mie Lendir and Ayam Goreng were placed on my table. Since I was a Mie Lendir virgin, I dove right into Batam’s signature dish. Unfortunately, the yellow noodles and the peanut sauce that was served alongside it tasted very bland, even with the help of some chopped chillies.

Disappointed, I set it aside unfinished and went for the Ayam Goreng. It turned out to be a delight. It came in small pieces with some sambal on the side. The chicken was marinated in a mixture of spices, which added a delicious savoury flavour to the proceedings, along with a hint of sourness. When mixed with the sambal, a pleasant combination of spicy and savoury danced wonderfully on my palate.
