The island of Belitung is famous not only for its breathtaking natural beauty, but also for its diverse local cuisine. One of the most celebrated dishes here is Mie Belitung (yellow noodles in sweet shrimp soup), which I sampled at Mie Belitung Atep during my trip to Tanjung Pandan.
Due to the close proximity between the islands of Bangka and Belitung – geographically and culturally – I assumed that Mie Belitung would share more or less the same characteristics as its neighbour’s Mie Bangka (chicken or pork noodles). Well, suffice to say, I was proven wrong as I discovered that there are significant differences that separate the two – from their ingredients to the way they are cooked.
Mie Belitung Atep and the dish that it specialises in have carved quite a reputation that has seen tourist from all over the country visiting the place. This is established quite clearly once you step foot inside the joint, which has its walls decorated with photographs of celebrities who have dined here.
One of the main reasons why Mie Belitung Atep sees a lot of traffic day in, day out is its strategic location in the heart of Tanjung Pandan. The crowd did not hinder the staff from serving their customers swiftly though, as my Mie Belitung arrived on my table in less than five minutes.
Comprising yellow noodles, sweet broth, potatoes, Kekian (minced prawn roll), fried shrimp, cucumber and bean sprouts, the deliciousness of this concoction is further enhanced by the addition of a few Kerupuk Emping (gnetum gnemon seed crackers).
Personally, I would say that the best thing about this dish is the small fried shrimps that are deep-fried, which lends a delightfully crispy texture to the proceedings. Add to that the silky-smooth home-made noodles, and you’ve got yourself a near-perfect combination that will leave you wanting more.
