Coffee lovers will find many to love about Belitung Island – especially when its abundance of coffee shops has become a tourism attraction in itself. One joint that has become the talk of the town is Warung Kopi Ake in Tanjung Pandan.
The perfect choice for a cup of joe in the morning, Warung Kopi Ake is strategically located in the heart of the city. It was founded 1921 and is longest standing establishment of its kind in Tanjung Pandan. However, despite its age, it now occupies a modern shoplot instead of an antiquated building. “A few years ago, the local government conducted a wholesale refurbishment in this area. Many of the old shops here, including ours, were demolished and rebuilt as shoplots,” says the owner of Warung Kopi Ake.
Peak hours at this place tend to be during breakfast time and close to midnight, and the joint has become a favourite stamping ground for the youngsters of Tanjung Pandan – especially during weekends.
Its menu offers nothing fancy, with only a few choices of coffees – including Kopi Susu (milk coffee) and Kopi Hitam (black coffee) – tea, and Teh Tarik (hot milk tea). A number of the owner’s family photographs adorn the walls of Warung Kopi Ake, lending a tinge of nostalgic value to the ambience. This is indeed a spot dedicated to its most loyal of customers and locals who just want to chill out and trade stories with each other.
