Bubur Ayam (chicken porridge) is one of Indonesia’s most favourite dishes of all time and is readily available almost everywhere across the archipelago. In Jakarta, however, we’re lucky enough to have not one but two legendary Bubur Ayam joints: Bubur Ayam Cikini HR Sulaiman and Bubur Ayam Barito. We put both their signature dishes to the test in order to find out which can be deemed the best out of the lot.
Bubur Ayam Cikini HR Sulaiman
The rich and smooth texture of its porridge is the crème de la crème of the Bubur Ayam here – a characteristic that has played a prominent role in winning the hearts and tummies of its regulars. The liberty for customers to fine-tune its saltiness and overall taste via the provided soy sauce and pepper is also a plus point, as is the shop’s clean and proper environment.
It only comes with fried chicken slices and Emping (melinjo nut crackers), which I find to be a tad lacklustre for my palate.

Bubur Ayam Barito
The addition of cheese sticks gives its chicken porridge an advantage over its counterparts, as does the raw egg, which lends a creamier feel to the concoction. The amount of fried chicken slices is quite generous as well, and the dish itself is perfectly seasoned to a T.
The place is a typical roadside warung with limited capacity. I’ve seen punters forced to eat inside their car as there were no seats available.

Our final assessment showed that both came out neck and neck. When it comes to taste, though, Bubur Ayam Barito is the clear winner here. Props must also go to this eatery for its lavish amount of fried chicken slices and its incorporation of cheese sticks into the mix.
