It’s safe to say that most tourists who stop by Bukittinggi are there to go to town on its assortment of delectable local dishes. If you’re one of them, then make sure to not miss out on the legendary Rumah Makan Selamat. Situated a stone’s throw away from Bukittinggi’s iconic Jam Gadang, this joint is considered the frontrunner in the region for serving mixed rice. Established in 1937, it is now run by the fourth generation of the founder’s family and has been sited at the same location since its conception on Jalan Ahmad Yani.
Housed in a shop lot that could fit about 80 customers, its interior sports a look similar to the Padang joints that you would normally find in Jakarta. The dishes are displayed at its shop window. Lunchtime is when things get packed here; it’s quite normal to be sharing a table with your fellow customers during this period of time.
I had heard on the grapevine that its Rendang Daging and grilled fish are the most sought-after dishes here, so I made it my mission to taste them both. The beef rendang–served on a plate with steamed rice, some stir-fried bean sprouts, and cassava chips–was richly seasoned and had a tender texture with a slightly peppery aftertaste. Offering a delightfully spicy sensation was the grilled fish, which was savoury and delicate. After giving them a go, I can confirm that the rumours regarding the two dishes are true. Now it’s your turn to try them out.
