Jakarta: Bubur Ayam Sukabumi

“As it is with the traditional Bubur Ayam, the porridge here is topped with thin chicken slices and cakwe (deep-fried wheat-based dough), garnished with a sprinkle of fried shallots.”

For some Indonesians, Bubur Ayam (chicken porridge) has become a staple dish to have for breakfast. During the early to mid nineties, Bubur Ayam Sukabumi, which is located in the heart of Tebet – was one of the most happening venues in town for youngsters to meet up and enjoy a spot of breakfast after a round of morning jog in Senayan during the weekend.

Occupying a little shop at the very end of Jalan Tebet Barat Dalam, Bubur Ayam Sukabumi was first established in 1988. They initially only served Bubur Ayam and Siomay (steamed fish dumplings), and would open from 7am-9pm on a daily basis. Now, though, additional choices could be found on its menu, ranging from a variety of Nasi Goreng to Chinese dishes, and it operates 24/7. With a total of 30 employees working shifts, Bubur Ayam Sukabumi is now housed in a two-storey joint, while as part of its expansion, you can find a couple of its branches over at Radio Dalam and Pondok Gede.

As it is with the traditional Bubur Ayam, the porridge here is topped with thin chicken slices and cakwe (deep-fried wheat-based dough), garnished with a sprinkle of fried shallots. If you stir the porridge around, you’ll get to see a piece of raw egg right in the middle. If you’re not a fan of eating raw eggs, remember to ask them to not put it in. Oh, and while you’re there, please give its scrumptious Siomay a try as well.

According to one of the employees there whom I spoke with, the joint is always packed during the night-time, which requires the place to utilise more workers for its night shift. This was a surprise for me, as it seems the trend of visiting Bubur Ayam Sukabumi in the morning has become a thing of the past. In spite of this, it still serves one of the tastiest Bubur Ayam around though.
