“Its refreshing Es Teler comprises jackfruit, coconut, and avocado, topped with the joint’s home-made top-secret syrup, which blends well with the texture and taste of the fruits, lending it a unique flavour.”
Indulging in Es Teler (iced fruit cocktail) is nothing new for me – it’s a favourite pastime, to be honest – and one Es Teler joint that happens to be my favourite is Es Teler Suka Mulia, which also known as Es Teler Megaria. Located over at Metropole Theater Complex in Central Jakarta – it has a branch in Slipi – Es Teler Suka Mulia has been around since the 1970s, and is claimed to be the first place to sell Es Teler in Indonesia. With its scores of loyal patrons, to find the place packed to the brim – especially during the weekend – is a familiar sight. So much so that a fellow food-lover who visited not so long ago went on and on about to me.
Situated at the food court behind the Metropole Theater building alongside the likes of Pempek Megaria, one of the best things about this joint – apart from its trademark Es Teler, of course – is its wide range of food and beverages to choose from. Besides the Es Teler, you could also have a go at its Ayam Bakar Solo (Solo grilled chicken) and Siomay while you’re at it. Its refreshing Es Teler comprises jackfruit, coconut, and avocado, topped with the joint’s home-made top-secret syrup, which blends well with the texture and taste of the fruits, lending it a unique flavour.
I can confidently say that the Ayam Bakar Solo here is one of the best in the city. The sweet-and-spicy sambal that it is served with complements the grilled chicken well, and it tasted brilliant. Now, the Siomay has a bit of history behind it: it was the first dish that was sold by the late founder of the place, Tukiman Darmowijono. Yes, even before he started selling Es Teler, regulars tend to come just for the Siomay.
