Jakarta: Martabak Pecenongan 65A

“The exasperation gathered during the long wait was quickly washed away after a single bite. Besides the mouth-watering fillings, its velvety texture also warmed the cockles of my heart.”

Among the culinary trends that swept the nation back in 2013, only one has managed to go the distance and still be a thing a couple of years later: the modern Martabak. Yes, the time-honoured dessert that is held dear by many a family in Indonesia suddenly became all the rage after the introduction of the groundbreaking Martabak Toblerone (Indonesian-style pancake with Toblerone filling). The instigator behind this craze was Martabak Pecenongan 65A, a modest Martabak joint that already has its name written in lights way before it came up with the idea of stuffing Nutella into a Martabak.

Established in 1970 under the guise of Martabak Pecenongan, it only adopted the number 65A for its moniker after its popularity resulted in its counterparts using its name for their benefit. Despite having been sitting on my must-try food list for a while, it was only recently that I finally got the chance to pay this place a visit. Located just opposite Red Top Hotel on Jalan Pecenongan – it has two outlets in Jakarta – the eatery was packed to the brim when I got there. Some were standing in line to place their order, while the rest were sat on chairs outside as they wait for their number to be called up. And get this: the shop had only been opened 30 minutes prior to my arrival, and already I was number 48 on the waiting list. Turns out that its staff would take orders before the shop opens, and would begin frying at 6pm, as informed by one of its employees.

The array of flavours on offer here include Toblerone, Nutella, Oreo, Skippy, and Ovomaltine – alongside the more regular ones such as chocolate, cheese, and peanuts. I opted for the Martabak Toblerone and Martabak Ovomaltine, and it took 45 minutes before they finally called my name. However, the exasperation gathered during the long wait was quickly washed away after a single bite. Besides the mouth-watering fillings, its velvety texture also warmed the cockles of my heart. Moist and juicy, it was definitely worth the trip, the cost, and the wait.
