Jakarta: RM Sido Mampir Pak Min

“Comprising lamb chunks, green tomato, and slices of cabbage all served in a thick coconut milk soup, the lamb was so delicate and aromatic. It turns out that my friend was right – I did fall in love with the dish.

Tebet is home to an abundance of eateries, ranging from your average roadside stalls to fancy restaurants. One long-standing resident of this culinary heaven is RM Sido Mampir Pak Min, which offers Tongseng Kambing (lamb in coconut milk soup) and Sate Kambing(lamb satay), among others.

With branches all over the city – and one in Bekasi – RM Sido Mampir Pak Min first took form as a small shop on Jalan Tebet Raya in 1985. In early 2010, it relocated to a new spacious building Jalan Tebet Timur Dalam II, which is a stone’s throw away from its original location. With a capacity of around 40-50 people, it unfortunately has limited parking space – just enough for a couple of vehicles – so it can be a tad troublesome if you drove your car here.

I’ve already paid a visit to this establishment twice in the past, and its Sate Ayam (chicken satay) has become a favourite dish of mine. Its dense peanut sauce really takes the dish to the next level. I would go as far as to say that it’s the best Sate Ayam I’ve ever sampled in town. On my latest visit, however, I had to forego the Sate Ayam and went with itsTongseng Kambing instead after a friend persuaded me to do so. He guaranteed that I would instantly fall in love with the dish from the first bite. Despite being not much of a lamb eater, I decided to comply with his suggestion.

Most of the customers there were having the Tongseng Kambing, which bode well for my experiment. After ten minutes, it finally arrived on my table. I scooped it up with a spoon and directed it into my mouth. My response was that of amazement. Comprising lamb chunks, green tomato, and slices of cabbage all served in a thick coconut milk soup, the lamb was so delicate and aromatic. It turns out that my friend was right – I did fall in love with the dish, and I enjoyed it until my very last bite. And I still longed for more.
