Jakarta: Sate Padang Ajo Ramon

“You can choose from beef, ox tongue, or intestines for your satay. I’d personally recommend that you go for the ox tongue.”

Having been operating since the 1980s, Sate Padang Ajo Ramon has endeared itself to the hearts and tummies of many a Jakartan – to the extent that many have described the joint as one of the best purveyors of Sate Padang (Padang beef satay) in town. To be honest, I’ve been a big fan of the dish since as long as I can remember, and this establishment is not an unfamiliar place for yours truly.

Prior to opening a stall just outside of Pasar Santa, the business touted its Sate Padang by means of a wooden cart pushed around the neighbourhood. Hard work will always bring dividends, and this is shown by the four outlets that have already been established under the Ajo Ramon banner, with the shop that operates under a tent at Pasar Santa acting as the flagship joint. Do take note that if you plan to come here, be prepared to fight for a parking spot, especially on a Saturday evening.

Parking difficulties have led me to instead indulge my love for Ajo Ramon’s Sate Padang at its other branch on Jalan Cikajang, which is not far from Pasar Santa. Its roadside location makes it a piece of cake to park your vehicle, and unlike its sister outlet at Pasar Santa, which opens at 4pm, this one begins its business every day at 11am.

You can choose from beef, ox tongue, or intestines for your satay. I’d personally recommend that you go for the ox tongue. Its tender texture is complemented impeccably by the reddish peppery gravy that it is served with. It turns out that this particular gravy – different from the yellowish gravy that you may find at other eateries that ply their trade in the Padang cuisine – originates from the Pariaman region. If you want, enjoy your Sate Padang with a bit of kerupuk kulit (ox-skin crackers) on the side. Dip them into the gravy before eating them.

What sets apart Sate Padang Ajo Ramon from its counterparts is its unique gravy. It is second to none, and it is because of it that I have made the conscious decision to never eat Sate Padang at another place other than Sate Padang Ajo Ramon.
