Bogor: Venus Bakery

“What impressed me the most was that its filling contained real durian fruit without any additional ingredients, which enriched the bread’s already-delicate texture even further.

Every now and then, Bogor is filled with Jakartans looking for a quick weekend getaway with their respective families. And when they return home, it is not an unfamiliar sight to see most of them carrying plastic bags stuffed with dozens of Roti Unyil. In terms of popularity for visitors, this small-sized bread is up there with Kebun Raya Bogor – so much so that many have made the journey to Bogor just to snap up a few Roti Unyil.

The mastermind behind Roti Unyil is Venus Bakery, which has been in business since 1992. Its founder, Hendra Saputra Hawidjaja, used to peddle bread using a cart in his residential area. In an effort to attract children to persuade their parents to buy his bread, he introduced a smaller variant that was available in different flavours, which became all the rage to not just kids, but people from all walks of life.

Prior to my visit to the bakery, I was already well informed of this delicacy – my sister would usually bring a box or two of Roti Unyil after a trip to Bogor – so it would be a sin if I didn’t drop by while I was in the area. The shop was easy to located, what with its big signpost standing in front of the shoplot where it is housed in. About 15 people were queuing up at the counter when I got there, which is a common sight on a daily basis for its staff who informed me that although it has opened a number of stands across the city, this is the only Venus Bakery outlet available.

When my turn came, I was flabbergasted by the choices available: from chicken floss, sausage, and meatball to cheese, chocolate, and peanut, among many others. Since I’ve never tried its durian-flavoured bread before, I went with that, along with chocolate and cheese. What impressed me the most was that its filling contained real durian fruit without any additional ingredients, which enriched the bread’s already-delicate texture even further.
