Padang: Kopmil Om Ping

The clock showed 1.15pm, and I had just eaten my fill by gorging on a plate of rice and some Beef Rendang. To calm my digestive system down, I decided to make a quick stop at Kopmil Om Ping for a glass of its renowned Es Kopi Milo (iced coffee with Milo). Located in Pondok, this shop is popular with the youngsters of Padang, whose numbers would swell after the sun sets. Despite the time, a crowd had already gathered when I got there.

The founder’s brother, Om Cun Cun, was in charge on that day. As he brewed my glass of Es Kopi Milo, he filled me in on the history behind the joint. “Kopmil Om Ping was founded 17 years ago by Om Ping. A total of six outlets are now operating across the city,” he says. “We basically pioneered the Es Kopi Milo trend in Padang. At the beginning, Om Ping adopted a trial and error approach to come up with the desired composition, after which he included it in our menu. Luckily customers went crazy about it!”

Their celebrated reputation has not stopped the business from expanding even further. “We brought our Es Kopi Milo to Jakarta a couple of years ago, but instead of opening up a shop, we chose to sell it using minivans that travel around town. One of them can be found in Mangga Dua,” he enthuses.

The drink itself is actually a very simple concoction, mixing iced coffee with a decent amount of Milo. Dense in consistency, the coffee’s aromatic taste is enriched by the sweet chocolate flavour of the Milo. If you plan to make a visit, do sample its Es Kopi Cadbury as well while you’re at it, which is iced coffee with added Cadbury chocolate.
