Semarang is home to many local delicacies that are worth your time and effort to locate and sample. During a recent trip to the city, I was fortunate enough to have stayed at a hotel that has quite a number of good eateries nearby. Chief amongst them was Bakcang Woody Plampitan.
Its appearance is million miles away from a typical restaurant – it’s located in a house, while you can only order its food to go. Bakcang Woody offers a selection of choices for its Bakcang (sticky rice with meat filling), including regular minced pork, minced pork and boiled salted egg, and the Bakcang Special, which is filled with mushroom, shrimp, minced pork, boiled salted egg, and roasted peanuts.
It is paramount that you place a pre-order before making your way around to the establishment, as without doing so will only result in you having the regular minced pork Bakcang as your only option. This is because the other flavours are made to order. I found out about this when I went there, so I left with only a regular minced pork Bakcang in hand. On the bright side, it was still warm and fresh, while the sticky rice was savoury and tender in texture. The minced pork flakes came with a slightly sweet aftertaste, which was good news for my taste buds.
According to one of its employees, Bakcang Woody normally distributes its range of Bakcang at churches every Sunday. The joint has also banded together with Sanitas Bakery and Koh Liem Restaurant, which sees both the bakery and the eatery selling Bakcang Woody products at their respective venues.
