“Coated in a crunchy cracker-like crust, the chocolate-and-cheese Lekker tasted sweet and salty – the result of the combination between chocolate and cheese, obviously.“
Prior to my departure to Semarang, I must admit that I hadn’t a clue as to how popularLekker (crêpe) was in the capital of Central Java. Only when I got there did I realise how celebrated it was. In fact, some of my friends have even gone on record to say that some of the best Lekker can only be found in Semarang. And intriguingly, they asked me to try out Lekker Paimo.
It was the second day of my Semarang sojourn, and I was looking through a list of tourist attractions from a directory in the lobby of the hotel that I was staying at whilst I waited for my driver to pick me up. And lo and behold, Lekker Paimo was included as one of the recommended eateries to visit. “Surely this is a sign!” I thought to myself. As soon as I hopped into the car, I asked my chauffeur to make a beeline to the eatery.
With such a glowing reputation and being so popular, I was slightly taken aback by the fact that Lekker Paimo was anything but an eatery and was still selling Lekker from a wooden cart by the roadside. Founded in 1978, it calls Jalan Karang Anyar its current home, right in front of SMA Kolese Loyola. A number of people were standing in a lengthy line in front of the cart when I got there, while some were sitting down on plastic chairs as they tuck away into their Lekker.
Unlike any that I have come across in Jakarta, Lekker Paimo offers several types of Lekkerfor customers to choose. I went for the chocolate-and-cheese variant, and the tuna-and-egg mix. Coated in a crunchy cracker-like crust, the chocolate-and-cheese Lekker tasted sweet and salty – the result of the combination between chocolate and cheese, obviously. The latter, on the other hand, came in a rather soft and thin wheat-based pancake layer instead. It was a tad spicy, with the flaky tuna-and-egg filling giving off a pleasant sensation that wrapped around my taste buds.
