Semarang’s Top 5

Although the capital city of Central Java is more celebrated for its cultural attractions, Semarang is also conveniently home to a wide range of delightful local treats – a trait that successfully propelled the town that is also known as The Port of Java to the top of my list of must-visit places. My love for its culinary lexicon has led me to compile a list of the best places to eat in Semarang and their respective signature dishes besides the inevitable Loenpia joints.

Soto Ayam Bokoran

I’m pretty sure that you will not be able to find a bowl of Soto Ayam (chicken soup) that could top Soto Ayam Bokoran’s anywhere in Indonesia. Its tastiness is the reason why the place is always crowded every single day.

Lekker Paimo

lekker paimo
Lekker is known as an affordable roadside snack, but Lekker Paimo has done wonders to elevate this treat to another level. Give its tuna-and-egg or chocolate-and-cheese Lekker a go. You can thank me later.

Nasi Goreng Babat Pak Karmin

nasi goreng babat pak karmin
If you find yourself within the vicinity of Pasar Johar, then it means you’re just a few steps away from Nasi Goreng Babat Pak Karmin and its signature Nasi Goreng Babat (fried rice with beef tripe). It is savoury, delicate, and, most importantly, spicy.

Jl. Aloon-Aloon Barat (across Bank BRI),

Wingko Babad Cap Kereta Api

A die-hard fan of authentic Indonesian delights who loves the idea of travelling to the cradle of those enticing local treats. Yet, you might often find this young lad busy with his guitar – be it alone in his room or, sometimes, on stage.
